One Day Lip Sync Project

For our group's lip synch project we had to produce a lip synch video for the ABBA song - S.O.S.We tried to use as many different locations as we could so that the video had a variety and we also tried out different camera angles so that the shots weren't all the same. After filming the video we then edited it using an editing program so that it looked more like a musci video. I feel that our lip synch video went well because the lip synch was exactly in time with the song and the dance moves (except Mikes bad dance moves) were good.

Task 1 - Purpose of Music Videos

The purposes of music videos are; to promote the artists image so that more people listen to their songs and to allow further oppertunity for the track to be heard from a different source rather than just listening to it through a radio. Mostly music videos are used to promote the artists image because otherwise they lose fans and so music videos allow for people to watch the music video and listen to the song at the same time. Not only do music videos gather more fans for the artist they keep them interessted in the artists music months after the the release of the album. The money made from the sales of the track that has been sold through the music video promoting the track also helps to recoup the money spent recording the music originally so this is a good way for the company to make the money back easily without spenting more money.

Once released the music video can be viewed not just on the TV through programs such as MTV, VH1, Kerrang, Hits tv etc but can be viewed on internet using sites like youtube, vodpod, videocure etc. It can also be downloaded and viewed through I-phones, mobile phones and even emails and this means that they can then be viewed by not just a big audience but also a varied audience.

Some music video are made for the beginning or end credits for some films and in these music videos some film clips are shown - as shown in the video below which is for the movie Avatar.

This is a clever way to promote the music video because if a lot of people have seen the film then they will want to see the music video with the film's soundtrack on it because it has clips of the film in it-allowing them to watch small sections of the film. And this way the audience is happy because they get to hear the soundtrack to the film whilst watching clips of the film and watching the music video, and the song artist and company are happy because their music is promoted through the music video.

Producers use stratergies to help promote the music video and as shown above the main way is to create the soundtrack to a soon to be popular film.

Another way that producers promote the music video is by getting celebrities to appear in the music video this is a clever way to promote the music video because people who like the celebrity will want to watch the video to see the celebrity star in it.

An example of this kind of promotion by producers is the music video recorded using Christopher Walken dancing to Fatboy Slim-weapon of Choice as shown below

The budgets for these kinds of promotional music videos are usually medium and sometimes large depending on the celebrity or location that the music video was filmed because they can be expensive.

Task 2 - Contempory Music Video Research

Purposes of Research

Research helps you to answers questions that you have and it helps you to understand more about the subject that you are trying to research. Not doing research means that you can't go into detail about the subject, because you have no information about the subject.

Primary Research
Primary research is research that you have done yourself, an example of primary research are questionnaires because they are research that you have collected yourself so that you can find out about your chosen subject.

Secondary Research
Secondary research is research that has not been done by you , examples of secondary research are format such as the internet, books, magazines etc these formats are places where you can get secondary research easily and quickly, rather than having to carry out your own research.

The two contemporary music videos I have been analysing are Beyonce-Single Ladies and Beyonce-Crazy in Love.

The first video I have been analysing is Beyonce-Single Ladies which is directed by Jake Nava and produced by RedZone entertainment. There is a lot of interesting uses of mise-en-scene in this music video. The main uses of mise-en-scene in this video include
the costumes which consist of black coloured leotards and high-heels for Beyonce and the two backing dancers which are coloured specifically so that they blend in with the colours of the background wich has been achieved by this video as the costumes do fit well with the background. The second use of mise-en-scene in this music video is the location in which this video was filmed which appears to be just a medium size TV studio which shows that the budget for this video was small (around £5,000),you can tell this because the location is a basic setting for a music video to be shot in.The background for this video is just plain white which fits in well with the costume colours and is linked to the location because the location is basic and the colour of the background is a basic colour which again shows that this music video had a small budget.

The camera work and lighting which are the Cinematography elements used in this music video are mainly used to alteer the stlye of this music video. The lighting used in this video is low leveled and is focused at just the background so that the background and the foreground are seperated, the level of the lighting is low in this video because it is being shot in Black and White and so you don't need to brighten up background and foreground colours because they are supposed to be dull. the camera shots are mostly basic with a few high angle shots, with the cameras following all of the action . The camera shots have been used to influence the style of the music video as most of the action is fast paced and so the camera shots are used to show the action in the video as being fast paced.

There is a relationship between the music and the visuals on screen in this video and you can tell this because the music is up-beat and flowing and the visuals on the screen are synchronised to flow with the pace of the music.

The genre for this music video is R&B and you can tell this because R&B has a fast up-beat to it which is exactly what this video has, and the main instuments that are used to make R&B music are drum kits, background vocalists and horns and all of these are used in this music video making the genre R&B.

I feel that the intended audience for this music video are aged between 25-35 years old because the music is the kind of music that this age group listen to because it is up-beat and the music fits the video.

The second music video I have been analysing is Beyonce-Crazy in Love which is directed by Jake Nava. There is a lot of interesting uses of mise-en-scene in this music video. The main uses of mise-en-scene in this video include the costumes which consist of mainly of tracksuits for the other dancers and a tank top, short shorts, and red high-heels for Beyonce. These costumes provide colour to the video and they suit the stlye of the video genre which is R&B and you can tell this because the style of the costumes and the style of the video are R&B related. The second use of mise-en-scene is location in which this music video was filmed, the locations that this video were filmed are an abandoned warehouse and backstreets in a town or city. This is a good location for this music video as it allows for a variety of camera angles and shots and so the video doesnt lose any action sequences because they can all be captured without the location interfering, you can tell that the budget for this video is small (around £5,000) because the visual effects and the location are fairly basic and don't have the same effects as some high budget visual effects and locations.

The uses of cinematography in this video are lighting and camera angles. The lighting for this video is mainly forced lighting which is focus on the foreground so that the music artist is seperated from the background, but there is a small amount of natural light aswell which is used well and the natural light isn't too bright so the video can be shot outside without the light affecting the video in a bad way by being too bright. The camera shots used in this video are pretty much just wide shots,MCU's,long shots, high angle and moving shots etc. these shots are used to this videoes advantage as the shots are varied and are'nt are just normal basic shot all the way through.

There is a relationship between the music and the visuals on screen and you can tell this because the music is suited to the visuals on screen as the visuals are in time with the music and the visual are constantly moving because the music is always moving and so the music needs to be moving all of thetime so that it can keep up with the visuals movement.

The genre for this music video is R&B and you can tell this because R&B has a fast up-beat to it which is exactly what this video has, and the main instuments that are used to make R&B music are drum kits, background vocalists and horns and all of these are used in this music video making the genre R&B.

I feel that the intended audience for this music video are aged 20+ because the music will appeal to anyone over the age of 20 and won't appeal so much to a younger generation.

Task 3 - Music Video Director Research

Gondry was born in Versailles, France. He is the grandson of Constant Martin (who is most famously recognized as the inventor of the Clavioline, a precursor to the synthesizer). He has a teenage son named Paul who is also an artist.
His career as a filmmaker began with creating music videos for the French rock band Oui Oui, in which he also served as a drummer. The style of his videos for Oui Oui caught the attention of music artist Björk, who asked him to direct the video for her song "Human Behaviour". The collaboration proved long-lasting, with Gondry directing a total of seven music videos for Björk. Other artists who have collaborated with Gondry on more than one occasion include Daft Punk, The White Stripes, The Chemical Brothers, The Vines, Steriogram, Radiohead, and Beck. Gondry has also created numerous television commercials. He pioneered the "bullet time" technique later adapted in The Matrix, in a 1998 commercial for Smirnoff vodka, as well as directing a trio of inventive holiday-themed advertisements for clothing retailer Gap, Incorporated.
Gondry, along with directors Spike Jonze and David Fincher, is representative of the influx of music video directors into feature film. Gondry made his feature film debut in 2001 with Human Nature, garnering mixed reviews. His second film, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (also his second collaboration with screenwriter Charlie Kaufman), was released in 2004 and received very favorable reviews, becoming one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year. Eternal Sunshine utilizes many of the image manipulation techniques that Gondry had experimented with in his music videos. Gondry won an Academy Award alongside Kaufman and Pierre Bismuth for the screenplay of Eternal Sunshine. The style of Gondry's music videos often relies on videography and camera tricks which play with frames of reference.
Gondry also directed the musical documentary Dave Chappelle's Block Party (2006) which followed comedian Dave Chappelle as he attempted to hold a large, free concert in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. His following film, The Science of Sleep, hit theaters in September, 2006. This film stars Mexican actor Gael García Bernal, and marked a return to the fantastical, surreal techniques he employed in Eternal Sunshine.
According to the Guinness World Records 2004, Michel Gondry's Levi's 501 Jeans "Drugstore" spot holds the record for "Most awards won by a TV commercial". The commercial was never aired in North America because of the suggestive content involving purchasing latex condoms.
In September 2006, Gondry made his debut as an installation artist at Deitch Projects in New York City's SoHo gallery district. The show, called "The Science of Sleep: An Exhibition of Sculpture and Pathological Creepy Little Gifts" featured props from his film, The Science of Sleep, as well as film clips and a selection of gifts that the artist had given to women he was interested in, many of them former or current collaborators, Karen Baird, Kishu Chand, Dorothy Barrick and Lauri Faggioni. A leitmotif of the film is a 'Disastrology' calendar; Gondry commissioned the painter Baptiste Ibar to draw harrowing images of natural and human disasters.
His brother Olivier "Twist" Gondry is also a television commercial and music video director creating videos for bands such as The Stills, Hot Hot Heat and The Vines. He was asked by French comic duet Eric and Ramzy to direct Steak, but declined;the film was subsequently directed by Mr Oizo.
Gondry was an Artist in Residence at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2005 and 2006. Later directing the music video for the Paul McCartney song "Dance Tonight", in which Gondry makes a cameo appearance. His most recent work was the directing of "Unnatural Love," the fifth episode in season two of HBO's Flight of the Conchords (TV series).
He is currently slated to direct Seth Rogen in the motion picture adaptation The Green Hornet.

haha i like this video and what and rocking song

girluisa

the best everrr

"Thank the lord this has been released"- 22 Nov 2003

Michel Gondry is widely acclaimed as one of the best - if not THE best - music promo directors ever.
One of his stand-out videos is "Star Guitar" for the Chemical Brothers, where the viewer is placed looking out of a train window and the landscape outside passes in time with the music. So, a tree represents a bass drum, or a bridge denotes a cymbal in the song. It's very clever, and almost hypnotic.
Another brilliant example, and perhaps one of his more famous ones, is his video for The White Stripes' "Fell In Love With A Girl" .It features Meg and Jack White, as animations using just Lego bricks. Again, totally absorbing.
Others who've requested the Gondry treatment for their music include Lenny Kravitz, Massive Attack and Daft Punk. All are excellent.
I admit I'm not totally down with his other work, like his ads for the likes of Nike and Smirnoff and short films, but just for his seminal music videos, this DVD is pretty much essential.

Chris Morse "faraway_pictures" (UK) -
How this guy has so many genuinley interesting ideas for videos is incredible. he's a real artist. The disc is double sided so when you think you've finally seen all his videos just turn it over and there's another load!

These comments about the video show that Gondry's work is watched by people and that some people find it to be a great music video. The music video itself is made using lego bricks and is a wierd take on a music video.

What's so genius about this video is that, what seems as a routine train ride through some European country, the scenary becomes musical notes and counts. Objects such as bridges and passing by trains take place of drum patterns and layers of the track...a well thought out creative vision. Truly an experience worth viewing time and time again (13,473).

TRULLYAwwwsommevid-

This is the best video that Gondry has directed trully a awsommme director.

KkAngel4Ever-
Michel Gondry is a great director. I think his work is awsome.
These comments about the video shown above show that Gondry's work is watched by people and that some people find it to be an interesting music video. The video sequence is shot looking through the eyes of a person riding on a train and it is clever as the sequence is repeated in some areas but you can't notice it unless you know about the repetitions.
The videos and responces above show how the target audience of Michel Gondry are responding to his work as they show that the audience enjoy watching his music videos because they think that he is a good director.
